Develop a Plan to Check IDs

Some minors may use a fake ID to get in your event. But, the truth is that most underage drinkers get alcohol without having their ID checked.

The most common fake ID is a real, valid ID that is borrowed from someone over 21.

If you decide to have alcohol at your event, you must have a plan for checking IDs at the entrance and/or when alcohol is provided to guests. You may need help from the staff you’ve recruited to do these tasks. Before we cover how to check ID’s, let’s focus on a few key tips that will help you make sure that ID’s get checked:

  1. Set up an entrance to your event where ID’s can be checked.
  2. Choose people to check ID’s that are responsible, detail oriented and outgoing.
  3. Have a plan in place for whose ID will get checked. Maybe everyone who looks younger than 30 will have their ID checked. This is usually a safe choice. Whatever the decision, make sure that the people at the door know and follow your plan.
  4. Whoever checks the ID should not be afraid to ask the person to take it out of their wallet and then ask questions about it. More techniques for checking ID’s will be covered in the next section.
