ID Checking at the Door

In this section, we will take a closer look at the skills you will need in order to properly check IDs and avoid minors consuming alcohol.

First, you need to know what IDs are acceptable in Missouri.

Acceptable forms of Identification

To be valid, an ID cannot be expired, modified or damaged. The following IDs are accepted by the State of Missouri for identification purposes:

1. Valid Driver's License (of any state)
2. Valid Missouri State Non-Driver's License
3. Valid Military ID
4. Valid Passport

Activity: Examine a Valid Driver's License

Valid Missouri driver's licenses have certain features. Many fake IDs are missing at least one or have inaccurately duplicated the feature. In order to become more familiar with them, take out your own driver's license or borrow a friend’s. Make sure you pick someone you know that has a valid driver's license, and consider these questions:

1. Has it expired?
2. Is the surface of the license smooth and laminated, or it is fused?
3. Where is the picture located? Is it on the right or left?
4. If you have access to a UV light, does the license show a diagonal pattern of outlines of the state of Missouri?
5. Are there reflective Missouri state seals across the bottom of the license?
6. Where are the birth date and expiration date? Where is the license number?
7. On the back of the license, is there a bar code?
8. Is the license clear and easy to read?

An "Under 21" license is actually one form of identification that the state of Missouri accepts. It is possible for guests to have a valid "Under 21" license even though they are over the age of 21. In this case, this is an acceptable form of identification. If someone gives you one of these licenses, the most important thing to check is an additional date given at the top of the license indicating when the individual will be "under-21 until".

But, make sure you compare the person with the ID. As stated before, the most common fake ID is a valid, borrowed ID. So, compare the picture on the ID, along with the height and weight with the person who gave it to you before you determine whether this guest can come into your event and be served.
