Checking IDs

After learning what kinds of IDs are acceptable and what real and fake IDs look like, you need to learn the steps to checking an ID.

1. The first step in checking IDs is to have the guest take the ID out of his/her wallet. Ask yourself, what kind of ID is it? Is this acceptable in Missouri?
2. The second step is to check the birth date.
3. The third step is to look at the IDs appearance. You should be looking for signs that this could be a fake ID.

What Should You Do When You Spot a Fake ID?

When you identify a fake ID, you should:
1. Respectfully refuse entry or service.
2. Notify the person in a polite way that fake IDs will not be accepted.
3. Inform any other people at the door or serving alcohol at your event.
4. Document the incident.

Logging information about the incident is the most important thing to do for legal purposes. Write down a description of the person, the time and date of the occurrence and how you knew the ID was not valid.

Let's look at an example, now that you know the steps to take once you have spotted a fake ID.

Activity: Take Action on a Fake ID

Mark was visiting his older sister Kim during spring break. Kim took Mark to your party. Mark walked in and asked for a beer and you asked him for his ID. He gave you his Missouri driver's license. You noticed that the back of his license was completely blank. You refused service. Then his sister said, "You can believe me. He is 21. He is visiting from out of town and I will vouch for him."

What would be a good example of something you should do?
1. Serve Mark.
2. Tell both Kim and Mark to leave.
3. Tell Kim and Mark that fake IDs are not accepted and refuse service. Also, let other servers know that Mark is underage, and document the incident.

#3 would definitely be the best option.
