Remember, just because a person is exhibiting one or even several of these signs does not necessarily mean the person is intoxicated.

A sober person may exhibit some of these signs, too. This makes determining intoxication even more difficult.

Here are two general rules to follow when determining if a guest is intoxicated:

  1. When a person shows a combination of several signs and symptoms of intoxication and/or
  2. The person shows a significant change in behavior, the likelihood that the person is intoxicated increases.

In any case, if there is a question of intoxication, do not take a chance. Err on the side of caution; stop service and find this individual a safe ride home. If there is no way for the person to get a safe ride home, have the intoxicated guest stay at the event all night.

Typical College Students

Thankfully, getting injured due to alcohol use isn’t a problem for most Missouri college students.

In the past year:
More than 8 out of 10 Missouri college students have not been hurt due to alcohol use.

Taken from the Missouri College Health Behavior Survey 2009, n=6257, given to a random sample of students at 13 publicly funded Missouri Institutions of Higher Education

Remember! You and your student organization are prohibited by the law from serving or allowing possession of any alcohol to an individual who appears to be intoxicated. If you serve alcohol to an individual who appears to be intoxicated, you can be issued an expensive citation. Also, if you have to stop service for someone, document the incident in your log.
